A practical step-by-step guide to troubleshoot Windows audio issues, from volume and output settings to drivers, services, and hardware.

You sit down, play a video, join a meeting, or open your favorite playlist and...

Nothing. Complete silence. 🔇

Before blaming the speakers, reinstalling Windows, or deciding your computer has suddenly forgotten how sound works 😅, let’s troubleshoot it properly.

The goal is simple:

Find where the audio stops → fix that point → test again

Step 1 — Check the Obvious First

Yes, we always start here.

Before touching drivers or Windows services, check the simple things:

  • Is the volume muted?
  • Is the system volume turned up?
  • Does the app have its own volume control?
  • Are your speakers or headphones powered on?
  • Is the cable connected correctly?
  • If you are using Bluetooth, is the device actually connected?

On Windows, click the speaker icon in the taskbar and make sure the volume is not muted.

💡 IT Support Tip: Always verify the simplest possible cause first. It saves time and avoids unnecessary changes.

Step 2 — Check the Output Device

Your computer may be sending audio somewhere else.

For example, Windows might be trying to play sound through:

  • HDMI monitor
  • Bluetooth headphones
  • USB headset
  • Docking station
  • Laptop speakers
  • External speakers

Click the speaker icon in the taskbar and check which output device is selected.

You can also go to:

Settings → System → Sound → Output

Select the device you actually want to use.

🎧 If your headphones are connected but Windows is sending sound to your monitor, increasing the volume won't help much.

Step 3 — Test Another App

Before assuming the entire computer has an audio problem, determine whether the issue happens everywhere.

Try:

  • YouTube
  • Windows system sounds
  • Spotify
  • Another browser
  • A local audio/video file

If audio works somewhere else, the problem is probably related to the original application.

Check that application's:

  • Volume
  • Audio output
  • Mute settings
  • Permissions
🔎 Troubleshooting is about narrowing the problem down.

One app has no sound? Check the app.

Nothing has sound? Keep going.


Step 4 — Check the Volume Mixer

Windows can control the volume of individual applications.

That means your system volume could be at 80%, while your browser is sitting quietly at 0%.

Go to:

Settings → System → Sound → Volume Mixer

Check:

  • System volume
  • Application volume
  • Output device for each app

Make sure the affected application isn't muted.

💡 This is a surprisingly common Help Desk issue.

Step 5 — Disconnect and Reconnect the Device

Sometimes Windows simply needs to rediscover the audio device.

For wired devices:

  1. Disconnect the headset or speakers.
  2. Wait a few seconds.
  3. Reconnect them.
  4. Test the audio again.

For Bluetooth:

Go to:

Settings → Bluetooth & devices

Disconnect and reconnect the device.

If necessary, remove the Bluetooth device and pair it again.

For USB headsets, you can also try another USB port.

Step 6 — Check Device Manager

Still nothing?

Now we're moving deeper into Windows.

Open:

Device Manager → Sound, video and game controllers

Look for your audio device.

Check for:

  • ⚠️ Yellow warning symbols
  • Disabled devices
  • Missing audio devices
  • Driver errors

Right-click the audio device and you can try:

Update driver

If the device appears disabled:

Enable device

You can also check:

Audio inputs and outputs

⚠️ Don't randomly uninstall every device you see. Troubleshooting should be controlled, not chaotic. 😅

Step 7 — Restart the Windows Audio Service

Windows uses background services to manage audio.

If the service stops or becomes unresponsive, your hardware can be perfectly fine while Windows produces no sound.

Press:

Windows + R

Type:

services.msc

Find:

Windows Audio

Check that its status is:

Running

If necessary, right-click it and select:

Restart

Also check:

Windows Audio Endpoint Builder

🛠️ This is a good example of why IT Support isn't just “restart the computer.” Sometimes we restart the specific component causing the problem.

Step 8 — Check or Reinstall the Audio Driver

Drivers allow Windows to communicate with your audio hardware.

If the driver is corrupted, outdated, or incompatible, you may lose audio completely.

Start with:

Device Manager → Sound, video and game controllers

Right-click the audio device and select:

Update driver

If the issue started after an update, check:

Properties → Driver → Roll Back Driver

If necessary, reinstall the correct driver from the computer or motherboard manufacturer's support page.

💡 Prefer the manufacturer's official driver when troubleshooting persistent hardware issues.

Step 9 — Run Windows Audio Troubleshooting

Windows also includes built-in diagnostic tools that can detect common audio configuration problems.

Go to:

Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters

Look for the available audio troubleshooter or use Windows' Get Help audio troubleshooting workflow, depending on your Windows version.

Let Windows run the diagnostic and review the recommendations before applying changes.

It may detect problems involving:

  • Audio devices
  • Services
  • Drivers
  • Output configuration
🤖 Sometimes Windows actually fixes Windows. We should give it a chance.

Step 10 — Determine Whether It’s Hardware

At this point, we need to isolate the hardware.

Try:

  • Different headphones
  • Different speakers
  • Another USB port
  • Another audio jack
  • The same headset on another computer
  • The computer's built-in speakers

Example:

Headphones don't work on Computer A, but work perfectly on Computer B.

The headphones are probably fine.

But if multiple known-good devices fail on Computer A, the issue is more likely related to that computer.

Possible causes include:

  • Damaged audio jack
  • Faulty speakers
  • USB port issue
  • Sound card failure
  • Motherboard hardware issue

That's when the ticket may need repair, replacement, or escalation.


🧠 The IT Support Troubleshooting Flow

When someone says:

“My sound isn't working.”

Don't immediately jump to reinstalling drivers.

Follow the problem logically:

VOLUME → OUTPUT → APP → MIXER → CONNECTION → DEVICE → SERVICE → DRIVER → DIAGNOSTIC → HARDWARE

Every step eliminates another possible cause.

That is the real skill behind troubleshooting:

Don't guess. Isolate. Test. Confirm.

And yes...

Sometimes the entire problem really was the Mute button. 😅🔇

No sound? Check:

Volume → Correct Output → App → Volume Mixer → Connections → Device Manager → Windows Audio → Drivers → Troubleshooter → Hardware

If the problem disappears after one step, stop there.

No need to fix something that isn't broken.
